Overview

Discriminative models are a class of machine learning models designed to distinguish between different classes or categories by modeling the decision boundary directly. Unlike generative models, which attempt to model the joint probability distribution of inputs and outputs, discriminative models focus solely on the conditional probability of the output given the input. Common examples include logistic regression, support vector machines (SVMs), and neural networks used for classification. These models are typically more efficient and require fewer assumptions about the underlying data distribution compared to generative models. However, a limitation is that they may not provide insights into the data generation process or handle missing data as robustly as generative approaches. Additionally, their performance can degrade if the training data is not representative of the operational environment.

Discriminative models are subject to governance controls such as transparency requirements and bias mitigation measures, as outlined in frameworks like the EU AI Act and NIST AI Risk Management Framework. At minimum, organizations must (1) provide documentation justifying model choice and (2) conduct regular bias and fairness assessments as part of operational oversight.
