While Narrow AI can outperform humans in its specific domain, it cannot transfer its expertise to unrelated domains. A limitation of Narrow AI is its brittleness: it cannot adapt to tasks outside its programmed scope, and any unexpected input or context can lead to failure or unintended outputs. This lack of generalization makes governance more straightforward but also introduces risks if the system is used beyond its intended boundaries.

Governance of Narrow AI is often addressed through targeted controls and sector-specific frameworks. For instance, the EU AI Act classifies many Narrow AI systems as 'limited risk' and requires transparency obligations, such as informing users when they are interacting with an AI system. In the financial sector, frameworks like the Monetary Authority of Singapore's FEAT principles mandate fairness, ethics, accountability, and transparency for AI-driven decision-making tools, including those that are narrow in scope. Organizations must implement data governance controls, such as ensuring training data quality and monitoring for bias, as well as establish clear documentation and explainability for system outputs.
